Computer Networking - Types of Networks


Four (4) Basic Types of Networks 

1. LAN or Local Area Network is a small network in a small building or area (usually in a single floor or office).

2. CAN or Campus Area Network is a LAN between two or more buildings in a single campus using fiber-optic cables as their backbones.

3. MAN or Metropolitan Area Network is a LAN across a metropolitan or city. It can span as much as 50 to 75 miles.

4. WAN or Wide Area Network is a LAN across a large geographical area using the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). It has a speed usually slower than LAN.
